The Smoky Mountain area is home to countless opportunities for fun and adventure. While the popular attractions are popular for a reason and deserve a visit, you’ll also want to take the time to explore things that are off the beaten path. We’re here to share with you some of our favorite hidden things to do in Pigeon Forge and the Smoky Mountains when we’re hoping to enjoy both popular and unique attractions.
1. Visit a Ghost Town in the Smoky Mountains
Did you know that there is a ghost town in the Smoky Mountains? If you love the history of the Smokies and want to explore what used to be a popular community, visit Elkmont Ghost Town in the national park! This abandoned resort town used to be a top vacation spot, but you wouldn’t believe it if you saw it now. When the national park was established, residents had to decide whether to sell their homes and relocate right away or get a lifetime lease on their home and sell it for a discounted price. Most of the leases expired in 1992, leaving about 70 historic buildings. Because there was no one to maintain them, the buildings started to deteriorate. The large number of abandoned buildings resulted in the area being referred to as Elkmont Ghost Town. When you visit this area of the park today, you’ll be able to see historic buildings that have been preserved for public visitation as well as the Elkmont Troll Bridge, another hidden gem in the Smoky Mountains! It’s a great place to take a step back into history and away from the hustle and bustle.
2. Stop for Ice Cream near the Titanic Museum Attraction
We know you’ve heard of the Titanic Museum Attraction, and you’ve certainly noticed it along the Parkway if you’ve been to the area before! One place you may not know about is Titanic Ice Cream, which is adjacent to the Titanic Museum Attraction. After discovering the ship, its passengers, and its crew by learning their stories, head next door for some tasty frozen treats! You can find everything from custom creations inspired by the ship to classic cones and sundaes. There are even savory options available for those who don’t have a sweet tooth!
3. Explore a Replica of Dolly Parton’s Childhood Home
Do you love Dolly Parton? You won’t want to miss the opportunity to learn more about her childhood by experiencing it firsthand! One of the best hidden things to do in Pigeon Forge is to walk through a replica of Dolly’s childhood home. This experience can be found at the world-class theme park, Dollywood. The two-room replica of her Locust Ridge childhood home gives guests a sneak peek into her upbringing. For more Dolly fun while you’re at the theme park, visit the Dolly Parton Experience!

5. Walk Behind a Waterfall in the National Park
Are you hoping to get out and explore the Great Smoky Mountains National Park while you’re in the area? It’s the most visited park in the country for a reason! From waterfalls and stunning views to diverse wildlife viewing opportunities, there’s something for everyone. One hidden thing to do that you’ll want to experience at least once is walking behind a cascading waterfall! Grotto Falls is the only waterfall in the park with a trail that passes behind it. Visitors will be able to walk directly behind the 25-foot waterfall! Along the way to the falls, you’ll cross multiple trails and travel through sections of old-growth forest and rhododendron. Be sure to bring a camera with you to capture the beautiful views of nature!
